WOMEN’S HEALTH
As a woman, I am constantly juggling many roles – daughter, wife, mother, professional, friend, colleague - just to name a few! As women, we take on a lot, perhaps more so than we should. And when we do that, we do less and less for ourselves and this can start to take a toll.
Also, as women, we are more likely to go through more adverse life events – pregnancy loss, sexual trauma, discrimination in the workplace, postpartum anxiety and/or depression, birth trauma or post-birth health complications. We also have a higher risk of developing chronic pain conditions and can suffer from stress and fatigue from our care-giving roles. It is better understood these days that cumulative stress can develop from the unequal distribution of household and child-rearing duties and the effects of the mental load or emotional labour. In addition, other factors such as trying to meet cultural and societal expectations of what it means to be a woman can add to one’s burdens.
I have been increasingly more focused on women’s health issues as I have gone through some of these experiences myself; having gone through three pregnancies, doing my best to navigate motherhood and juggling the many roles I have.
When adverse experiences occur, we often feel at a loss and it can start to affect our mental and emotional health, our daily functioning and relationships. In my practice, I endeavor to help you work through the impacts of these experiences, so that you can start to build emotional well-being, resilience, and be more connected in your relationships.
Please contact me for an appointment if you feel you could benefit from some psychological help in any of these matters.
